Statement of the Job:
Housed in a 100,000 ft2 laboratory with over 200 full and part-time employees, the Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) at the University of Maine is a recognized research leader in civil infrastructure, energy and defense applications. The Center has won numerous national and international awards for innovations such as the bridge-in-a-backpack, the first grid-connected floating offshore wind turbine in the US which utilized an innovative concrete hull and a composite tower, and has been recognized as Transportation Champion for Change at the White House.
The Transportation Infrastructure Durability Center (TIDC) is the 2018 US DOT Region 1 (New England) University Transportation Center (UTC) located at the University of Maine ASCC. The TIDC focus is on extending the life and improving the durability of transportation assets. TIDC brings together six member Universities and the Departments of Transportation within the New England region. https://www.tidc-utc.org/
We are looking for a creative and dynamic individual with strong technical-research, interpersonal, and organizational skills who will manage the TIDC. The individual will bring together researchers from six New England universities, state DOTs and industry to identify and solve the most pressing transportation infrastructure durability problems. Our motivation is to help DOTs extend the life of existing infrastructure as well as construct new, longer-lasting assets. The technologies, methods and policies that we develop will solve real problems faced by DOTs and infrastructure professionals in New England and across the nation.
Interested candidates must demonstrate experience conducting and/or managing research in a university environment, preferably related to transportation infrastructure and in partnership with state DOTs, industry, and/or federal agencies. Experience in a consulting, construction, or similar civil engineering environment demonstrating an understanding of transportation durability issues is a big plus. This position is open to candidates with a wide range of previous experience, including early mid-career professionals looking for a new challenge and late-career professionals. This opening offers a great career opportunity for an engineer or other scientist with a strong technical background and project management experience.
The UTC has funding through 2023, with additional 5-years extensions possible based on performance. The new hire will study operations of other UTCs to implement best practices, and be responsible for the generation and submission of all Grant Deliverables and Reporting Requirements defined by the US DOT. This position is contingent on external funding and successful performance. The winning candidate may be eligible for parallel research faculty appointment depending on qualifications and interests.
Typical hiring range for this position is $108,000 to $135,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
