John Unsworth Bio

John Unsworth has over 35 years of Class 1 railway engineering experience, culminating in the position of Chief Engineer – Bridges for Canadian Pacific (CP). At CP he had a system-wide responsibilities for the assessment (condition inspection and strength rating), planning, design, fabrication, construction, and maintenance of timber, concrete, and steel railway bridges.

Mr. Unsworth has also served as President of the American railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA), Chair of the AREMA Steel Structures Committee, Chair of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) Bridge Research Group, and is the author of the book Design & Construction of Modern Steel Railway Bridges. he is a licensed Professional Engineer in five Canadian Provinces.

The presentation will outline the effects of Heavy Axle Loads (HAL) on the accumulation of fatigue damage in steel railway bridges and mitigation measures for fatigue susceptible members to extend the service life of steel railway bridges.
