Critical Issues in Transportation: Addressing Unprecedented Challenges and Opportunities
The transportation profession is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. The Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board attempted to look to the future to identify the most critical issues facing transportation in an effort to help inform both policy and research agendas for transportation. Among the issues identified were transformational technologies and services, energy and sustainability, system performance and asset management, and resilience and security. TRB Executive Director Neil Pedersen will discuss challenges and opportunities in each of these areas and how transportation can evolve to meet growing needs and adapt to changes in society, technology, the environment, and public policy.
Neil Pedersen, P.E. Bio
Neil Pedersen has been Executive Director of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) since 2015. In that role he provides executive direction and leadership to TRB’s technical activities, including its annual meeting of over 14,000 transportation professionals, its 180 technical committees, its conferences, and its publications; its peer reviewed policy consensus studies; and its multimodal cooperative research programs. Prior to joining TRB, Neil spent 29 years at the Maryland Department of Transportation.
