Portable Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Sensor for UAV Bridge Inspections

Bridge inspection using an unmanned airborne vehicle (UAV) platform with various remote sensing technologies has become a promising approach in civil engineering. Recent advances in UAV, battery technology, and wireless communication have also enabled the integration of conventional sensors with UAV for bridge inspections. In this presentation, a compact, self-powered, portable synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging sensor for UAV bridge inspections is described. Principle of SAR imaging is first introduced, followed by the development of a portable SAR imaging sensor. Field test result of the portable SAR imaging sensor on a bridge abutment (Lowell, MA) is provided, as well as our data registration and visualization approach for UAV bridge inspection.
