Project Abstract:
The objective of this study is to future-proof transportation infrastructure (e.g., highways, railways, and bridges) through proactive, intelligent, and public-involved planning and management so that they can prepare appropriately, minimize impact, and capitalize opportunities in the face of future events, changes, and needs. Examples of future events, changes, and needs include climate change, sea level rise, and extreme weather in the northeast region. The ultimate goal of this study is to generate products that facilitate informed decision making in new and existing transportation infrastructure planning and management by incorporating future risks and opportunities into consideration. Therefore, new and existing transportation infrastructure can not only meet the needs for today, but also for the future.

Implementation of Research Outcomes:
We have developed a transportation infrastructure future-proofing taxonomy and knowledge base. We are in the process of asking ConnDOT engineers to validate the product and evaluate the chance of implementing the product in their organization.
Impacts and Benefits of Implementation:
The research project is in the initial phase and is ongoing. The benefits will be determined towards the end of the research project.
